Companion Category - Awarded to Pumpkin, a four-year-old pitbull mix. Suffering from malnutrition and with a fractured pelvis, broken jaw and both front legs crushed, Pumpkin was abandoned and left to die in 1994. Overcoming her horrific injuries, she brings joy to all who know her.

Hero Category - Awarded to Blackball, a nine-year-old Labrador/Husky mix. While performing his normal duties of guarding the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house at NJIT, Blackball attacked a mugger, thwarting a holdup. In the course of his heroic actions, Blackball was shot in the head, narrowly missing his brain. By fearlessly preserving the lives of his "fraternity brothers" Blackball earns Hero status.

Therapy Category - Awarded to Ranger, a ten-year-old mixed breed dog. Ranger was adopted from a shelter at age two, and began a career in a canine search and rescue unit. Following multiple surgeries, Ranger began a new career as a therapy dog. Despite her own disabilities, Ranger willingly serves to bring cheer to nursing home and hospital residents.

Therapy Category (Posthumous) - Howdy, a ten-year-old Quarterhorse, that was a therapeutic driving horse, receives a posthumous Hero award. Howdy was struck and hit by a hit and run driver while transporting a carriage of three instructors, who were all spared critical injury due to his bravery.

Owner - Handicapped High Riders
Veterinarian - Dr. S.P. Dey, II

Professional Category (Posthumous) - Magnum, an eight-year-old Belgian Malinois that served on the K-9 unit of the Woodbridge Police Department for seven years receives a posthumous Professional award. Magnum was responsible for numerous criminal apprehensions and narcotics detections and he protected President Bill Clinton during a visit to Woodbridge High School. Magnum's nomination was seconded by Gov. Christie Whitman and Woodbridge Mayor James McGreevey.
